Take Care of Your Kokedama

Updated: Nov 14, 2023

Kokedama, a centuries-old Japanese art form, is gaining popularity as a unique and artistic way to display houseplants. The term "Kokedama" translates to "moss ball" in Japanese, and it involves creating beautiful, living sculptures by wrapping the roots of a plant in a ball of soil and moss. In this blog, we will explore the art of Kokedama and share essential tips on how to keep your Kokedama healthy and thriving.

Caring for Your Kokedama:

Now that you have your beautiful Kokedama, it's time to learn how to care for it to ensure its longevity.

Watering:

Kokedama requires frequent but light watering. Dunk the entire ball in a bowl of water or hold it under a running tap until it becomes fully saturated. Allow excess water to drain before returning it to its display location. The frequency of watering will depend on the plant type, humidity, and light conditions, but generally, Kokedama should be watered every 2 weeks.

Light:

Place your Kokedama in a location with appropriate light conditions for your chosen plant. Most Kokedama thrive in bright, indirect light. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight for extended periods.

Humidity:

Kokedama benefits from a humid environment. You can mist the moss regularly to maintain the humidity level. You can also place a tray with water and pebbles near the Kokedama to increase ambient humidity.

Fertilizing:

Fertilize your Kokedama sparingly, using a diluted liquid fertilizer once every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Always follow the specific instructions for your chosen plant. (Contact us for the liquid organic fertilizer)

Maintenance:

Keep an eye on your Kokedama for any signs of pest infestations or overgrowth. Prune and trim the plant as needed to maintain its shape and prevent overcrowding.

Kokedama is a beautiful and artistic way to display houseplants, but it requires some specific care and attention to keep it healthy and thriving. By choosing the right plant, creating the Kokedama properly, and following the care guidelines provided in this blog, you can enjoy the beauty of your living sculpture for years to come. So, embrace the art of Kokedama and bring a touch of Japanese aesthetics into your living space!
